Resin Printing

Safely Handling Resin

When 3D printing, it is essential to understand how to safely handle resin.

VOCs

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are emitted as gases from certain chemical solids or liquids, including things like paint, cleaning solutions or 3D printing resins. Some VOCs are known or suspected to have both short- and long-term effects on health. You should always minimize your exposure to VOCs.

For more information, visit the EPA's website Volatile Organic Compounds' Impact on Indoor Air Quality.

Resin Hazard Warnings

Virtually every resin, including water-washable and plant-based, carries the following hazard warnings:

  • Causes skin irritation

  • Causes serious eye damage

  • May cause an allergic skin reaction

  • May cause respiratory irritation

  • May cause damage to organs through prolonged or repeated exposure

  • Harmful to aquatic life with long lasting effects

PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and a safe work space with good ventilation are essential when working with any hazardous materials or chemicals, including resin and isopropyl alcohol.

You do not need to be scared when 3D printing, but you do need to be informed, responsible and limit your exposure.
